I had a good experience when I came here. People were nice, they had good tasting cupcakes which were moist and had lots of frosting which was good. I like them. Of course you cant' compare to Sprinkles but if you think its over hyped and are willing to try something new Its pretty good.

I love dessert but I also like to consider myself a dessert snob. I am calorie aware and have to have a dessert that is worth the calories. Starz cupcakes are worth the calories!
I was introduced to Starz by a friend of mine who is local to Santa Cruz. The first day I ate one cupcake I was addicted. In fact, I can't give you my favorite flavor because there are so many!
Recently, I was with the friend who introduced me to Starz. She had a box of the lemon cupcakes, I ate one and I was in absolute heaven! One of my many favorites.
Yesterday, once again, I went to Starz to get more cupcakes after a beach day. Lisa, the owner, was there and I always enjoy talking to her. She is very passionate and it shows in the quality of the cupcakes. I mentioned the lemon cupcakes I just ate over the weekend and she said they were being made again this weekend.
Needless to say, I will be heading to Starz Cupcakes in Capitola from San Jose this weekend for those lemon cupcakes.
Thank you to the staff at Starz Cupcakes for always satisfying my sweet tooth. :)

I was driving through the Santa Cruz area while on vacation from Oregon. I'd heard about Starz and how delicious the cupcakes were so I stopped by to try them.
I have never had gourmet cupcakes before so I didn't know what to expect. WOW! The cupcakes are moist and delicious. I got four different flavors and cut them in quarters so I only had one whole cupcake. Every flavor was delicious. I wanted more. I also like the fact that they have gluten free cupcakes. I would love to be able to take some back to Oregon to share with my co-workers. One has celiac disease and it is difficult to go places to eat where she can go with us. If I was going right back home, I would buy a dozen or two to share with my co-workers.
I love the shop, the photographs and story on the wall about where the recipe came from. I love the fact that it went back several generations. I also love the other wall where they have pictures of the Stars that have tried the cupcakes and love them.
If you are in the Santa Cruz/Capitola area you have to check this place out!

Today I am taking the time to finally express my LOVE for these cupcakes. I was once again the hit of the party with my Starz cupcakes-always go with the assortment of cakes so all can choose their favorites. Since the store opened (then known as sparkels) I have been hooked. I am always surprised at each event that EVERYBODY knows and loves Starz cupcakes. If you have not experienced this delite it is a must do...enjoy....yelp me your favorite-mine is the purple velvet.

I was living in Asia, when my best friend was having her Bachelorette Party close to Capitola. So I decided to contact Starz Cupcakes to see if they could help me surprise my bestie with their delicious cupcakes in the morning.
The service I have experienced throughout the exchange of several emails with Starz Cupcakes was exceptional. Lisa, the owner, did anything possible to make this surprise a memorable one, and was a true star. With the 13 hour time difference we had between Asia and California, she would stay up all night checking her emails for my replies, and came up with wonderful ideas. This kind of service is just over the top - and needless to say that the bride-to-be and the girls loved the cupcakes!!
Thank you again, dear Starz Cupcakes Team, for helping me to "be part of the party" when I was actually thousands of miles away!!
I can honestly and truly recommend Starz Cupcakes and cannot wait to come and say hi in person!

If you're into cupcakes then look no further than Starz. Their delicious original family recipes go back many generations. Just check out the great family photos on the wall. It's a cool history lesson on how serious this family is about baking. The store is very welcoming and clean, the delicious cupcakes are not only good tasting, but a work of art. Their employees are very nice, I'm always greeted very warmly and always leave with a smile on on my face. I highly recommend Starz Cupcakes.

The first time I tried Starz I thought they were a bit sweet. Today I got 7 different Cupcakes and HOLY CRAP. I could shoot myself for not re trying them sooner. I had a choc with pb exceptionally perfect...so I took a nibble of the choc with choc, caramel and sea salt. I thought salt eew but OMG it is excellent. can not wait to try the others....My daughter thinks the Vanilla with Vanilla frosting was just right not too sweet. She at 10 even likes the sea salt. she too can not wait till tomorrow to try the rest...

OMG Delicious!!!
As I left MaxMuscle today, I noticed a little place called STARZ cupcakes, I was a little intrigued as I have never been to a exclusive cupcake store. When I went in the place was fairly plain, one woman stood behind the counter, I overheard her speaking to her customer, and saying " you must eat this cupcake with a fork, as it has a gooey caramel center..hmm...I thought sounds like something I must indulge myself with.
I stand here in front of my laptop having just finished my caramel cupcake, and let me tell ya, I have a smile ear to ear. It was by far the best cupcake I have ever had, it was so fresh and perfectly baked, the caramel was so sweet and delicious...
If you come to Capitola and dont try STARZ cupcakes, you really have missed out on this little jewel we have in our city.

Yummy Yummy. In this age of flourless chocolate cakes etc. one would think that cupcakes are plain and dull. But think again, these are awesome. They use all fresh and high quality ingredients and have constantly changing creations.,This months pumpkin cupcakes are scary good , even for a chocolate addict like myself. Plenty for chocoholics as well. I decided to try it after reading a review in the Mercury News about how cupcakes were becoming popular again and listed two or three cupcake specialty stores in San Jose. It is great that there is such a store in Capitola and you don't have to drive to San Jose to try something different and really good.

If I could give this bakery 10 stars I would. I called Starz in a complete panic at 6pm and needed 100 cupcakes in 30 minutes for someone's wedding and they did it without hesitation. They literally saved the day and I will be forever grateful. Their cupcakes look sublime and I would think it's people like this that deserve the most praise.
A million thanks

This cupcake shop has great cupcakes! The cakes taste very homemade, unlike other "gourmet" cupcake shops like Sprinkles or Kara's cupcakes. The flavors are different and familiar. They have the traditional birthday flavored cake, yellow cupcake with a strawberry on top but they also have a twist on their cupcakes, i.e. a turquoise velvet cupcake instead of red velvet. They also have original flavors - my boyfriend got a Snickers-flavored cupcake.
Cupcakes are $3.00 each, but they are huge! When you eat here, they put it in a cup and you it with a spoon, so it's kind of treated like an ice cream.
Another thing that I was very surprised about was the service. The lady who served me, who seemed like the owneralthough I am not sure, was extremely nice. She was very comfortable joking around with customers in a very friendly way and was pleased with any feedback we had, although she was very modest. She told us that they had received a call from the Food Network the other day, of being on the Cupcake Wars show.
I would definitely recommend this cupcake shop and return if I were in the area!

Oh how I wish I wasn't on a no-carb/low sugar diet!!! Trying to resist the delicious looking display on my many trips to Starz (as a chauffeur for the husband) is RIDICULOUS. In my weaker moments, I have sampled a few cupcakes and they are amazing! I try and stick with the gluten free/weight watchers/diabetic options and have never felt like I was missing out. SO GOOD. soft, moist, delicious.
My husband is down there at least once a week. You know it's bad when we were having lunch at Fresh Choice down the street and saw the owner there and not only did she recognize him but tells him about a cupcake that is offered that day and 30 mins later we are leaving Starz with 6 cupcakes!
If you stop by and they are not open, the Yogurt shop next door carries a limited selection.
Flavors change-but if they have the ugly cupcake-(stitch gone wild or something similar) GET IT! you will not be sorry.

Was over the hill today for my anniversary a last min. thing and called to see if they had any gluten free cupcakes left. They had just sold out but when they found out it was my anniversary they offered to make some more for me if I could come back later on today and asked what flavor I wanted. They also called me back later and said they wanted to make them special for me and asked if I wanted them to customize my cupcakes with my wedding colors! My husband loved our purple cupcakes with green and purple frosting. It really was a nice touch for our anniversary. So thanks so much for going out of you way to make my special day even better!!!

Holy moly, these are great cupcakes! While there are a few 'standards', mainly there are different cupcake flavor combos baked fresh each day, so you never know what there will be to choose from. I like that their frosting is not too sugary sweet. My dog loves the banana and ginger, bone-shaped pupcakes as a treat. Definitely two thumbs up!

OMG 5 stars is not enough for this place! The ladies are fabulous, the cupcakes are delicious and they even have yummy pupcakes that my 3 dachshunds go crazy for.
I love that they even serve cold milk which just makes a Chocolate Peanut Butter cupcake more than perfection.
Fave flavors are: White Chocolate Raspberry, White Choc Peanut Butter, Big Guy Cappuccino, Triton's Daughter, White Choc Caramel, Choc Peanut Butter....okay, there are just too many to name.
Definitely try this place...my mom is even insisting that I can't go home to Texas to visit this summer if I don't bring Starz Cupcakes with me. :-)

White cupcake with white sugary frosting? Frosting so sweet that it almost crunches from the sugar? Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout. I don't want fruit flavors. Or chocolate. Or cream cheese frosting. I want the basic. The original.
When I saw that they had "my" kind of cupcake, I was giddy. The boyfriend picked some ridiculous chocolate and caramel monstrosity with a piece of snicker's bar on top.
We took our cakes to go and ate them in the parking lot...as an appetizer. (Cupcakes at 5:30pm on a Sunday? I don't mind if I do!) The first lick of the frosting told me I had hit pay-dirt. I dug down into the wrapper to find a dense, moist, white cake.
The only reason I didn't give this spot a 5? They had Pepsi products instead of Coke. A girl needs a Coke Classic when she's eatin' this kind of magic.

Starz cupcakes ROCK! They are delicious and mouth watering! Oh and they have the cutest names ever! I had a party and ordered 60 cupcakes for my grand opening and it was a hit! love this place! The cupcakes are amazing! The store is owned and run by a Mother/Daughter team who use centuries old family recipes and give them a tasty and cute modern twist. Finally got to taste this place
Where to begin
1. They have a ridiculous number of flavors
2. You can get their cuppies at Yogurt DeLite locations AND some local movie theaters
3. Good frosting and cake
4. Flavor profiles aren't too super sweet.. well balanced
5. Convenient hours and location (get your nails did, grab a yogurt and cuppies)
6. Cuppies are the size of Sweet Passions (larger than expected) and a good deal for your money
7. There presentation is steller (cute wrapping and frosting patterns) I love the fact that they pay attention to details like that
TIZZLE MOM AND POP SHOP APPROVED
The snickerlicious or whatever I had at the movie theater today was a whole small package of caramel and chocolate goodness for 3.25.
I am not a fan of Kara's or Sprinkles (which are smaller and the ones I have had either tasted funny, off or stale) so this place is my new go to for cuppies in the 831.
NOTE: closed Mondays!
Double Note: Yes they do weddings and events but will charge you for the cupcake stand rental in addition to your cupcake order (friend of a friend is using them for an event)
Listed in: cuppies

I love to ride my bike to Starz, especially if I take the long way and get in 20 or 30 miles of beautiful Santa Cruz coastline and mountains! Then I feel justified in ordering a delicious White Chocolate Peanut Butter or Blarney Stone cupcake, or my new favorite, Lemon (Something), the one with fresh lemon curd filling! The flavors are really fresh and natural, and the size is plenty large--can't imagine anyone wanting more! (In fact, the triple chocolate is over the top, just way too rich to eat all at once and still ride your bike home!) I have avoided the neon ones so I can't recommend them. As a cyclist, I think neon belongs on your jacket, not on your food! But the others are great!

I'm in love with this place. I've tried quite a few flavors--favorites so far are White & Black (white cake with chocolate frosting) and Grasshopper (chocolate cake with mint frosting). These are simple, delicious cupcakes like you preferred when you were a kid. A lot of flavors are based on candy bars (Butterfinger, M&Ms, Snickers) and cakes (strawberry shortcake, pineapple upside-down cake). As others have mentioned, the colored parchment paper complements the colors of the cupcake itself, and decorations typically are minimal in a classy-looking way. They do have about a half dozen containers of sprinkles at the counter for you to decorate your own cupcake if you prefer.
The staff I've encountered have always been very pleasant. Free samples are often available, and I've even gotten free cupcakes more than once!
There are a few tables with bar stools inside. A movie is almost always playing over the counter, but it's not loud enough to interrupt the flow of conversation.
All in all, it's a friendly, efficient business that offers a lot of creativity and even more deliciousness.

I realize this is a matter of personal taste, but for me NOTHING beats these cupcakes. NOTHING. N-O-T-H-I-N-G. My problem with most cupcakes is they only get one part of the equation- perfect frosting but bland and/or dry cake, or fabulous cake and 'eh' icing. THESE CUPCAKES HAVE IT ALL. The cake is as moist as boxed mix while still retaining that 'baked from scratch' flavor. The frosting is the PERFECT buttercream- sweet, buttery (even a little salty!), creamy, and the different flavorings I've tried have all been spot on. I really can't imagine a more perfect cupcake. AND when I went in right before closing once, I got some free cupcakes from the wonderful ladies who own the shop! Who could ask for more?!?!

I love cupcakes and I love Starz! I had the blueberry cupcake, the chocolate peanut butter, the georgia peach and the double chocolate cupcake. I wanted to eat all four of them myself but my friends were with me and I couldn't be rude.
The blueberry cupcake was great, like a gourmet blueberry donut but in cupcake form. The peach was very sweet and very peachy. I recommend the chocolate and chocolate peanut butter- both were awesome!

The people that gave these cupcakes a low rating are delusional and probably have not eaten a real cupcake in their lives..seriously.
And that guy who compared these cupcakes to a hostess cupcake..wow that was SOOOO wrong on so many levels.
Serioulsy people, if you have a hankering for something sweeeet and yummy, and want the REAL thing, come here. My friend and I are obsessed with cupcakes and have tried TONS of cupcake shops, even that sprinkles everyone is talking about - which is SO not better.
Here's the difference:
Sprinkles cupcakes (and all other cupcakes for that matter, including those cupcakes made in whole foods - this is for that awful comment below..) : are dry, filled with air, have NO real substance to them, and you can eat them within one bite. ADDITIONALLY they are too expensive and you have to buy more than one in order to fulfill your craving...basically not worth it at all - might as well make your own.
Sstarz Cupcakes (which is soon to be called Starz.. and I can see why): have HUGE cupcakes that are SUPER moist and dense and probably cost half of what one cupcake at other stores cost. Plus they have totally original flavors that I don't think you could just whip up if you wanted to at your own house.
The bottom line: You'd have to buy at least 2-3 boring sprinkle cupcakes to get your fix instead of just buying one DELICIOUS and one of kind Starz Cupcake.
P.S. I work in a santa cruz bakery myself, and have tried all other cupcakes in town, and beleive me, these ARE the best cupcakes you can get in santa cruz, no doubt about it!
Just went in today for the first time. Service was great and the cupcakes-hands down, are the BEST in the county. These are the type that you dream of when you are a child, and search for as an adult. The white cake with the vanilla frosting was delicious as was the one that reminded me of a strawberry shortcake, just yummier. Awesome baking guys THANK YOU

Being the cupcake connoisseur that I am, I couldn't wait to try Starz Cupcakes since I am a frequent patron at their neighbor, Yogurt Delite. I have a very critical palette for cupcakes and I am not the hugest fan of Kara's or Sprinkle's cupcakes, because I find them overly sweet, but I am always willing to try a new place.
I was very pleasantly surprised with my experience at Starz. The owner was extremely nice and offered my friend and I samples of the various frostings which were delicious. I got the purple velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting which has a hint of cinnamon- YUM! I found the size of the cupcakes very satisfactory (it is a cupcake for a reason!) and the price was good (about $6 for two cupcakes). They are very handcrafted and impressive to look, at and would make an awesome gift.
They also offer a weight watchers cupcake for those who are interested in that kind of thing. They had various drinks on the menu. Also they have a few different kinds of sprinkles so you can add your own sprinkles on your cupcakes. I thought Gayle's was my current fav cupcake but I have a new one. All in all the best cupcake I've had in a while!!! Try it this place it is awesome I will definitely be going back to get my cupcake fix and try all the different flavors!!

This is a family owned and run business. The family has been making and selling homemade fresh baked / cooked food for generations and it shows!
The ladies who work there (3 generations) are amazing, friendly people.
I've had two of their cupcakes - the chocolate peanut butter and the white cake peanut butter (can you tell I like peanut butter) and both were so yummy.
I recommend to anyone looking for a real cupcake. they are large and exactly like the previous yelper said "muffin consistency cake taste".
good price too!

I loved the Starz Cupcakes. I thought they were very tasty and HUGE! I tried the pink velvet which almost had a bit of cinnamon in it. Very surprising but delish. My favorite was the Snickerlicious and the Strawberry one (forgot the name). For those questioning the "white" cupcake- it is not super white because they don't use bleached four in it. So yeah, it is not going to be completely white. Also, I thought the prices were quite reasonable.
I highly recommend Starz and the owner is wonderful. Support your local mom and pop cupcake shop!

Fantastic cupcakes. I recommend the snickers or peanut butter flavored variety. Owner is extremely friendly and courteous. This place exemplifies American entrepreneurship. I completely disagree with those reviews complaining about the portion size? Jesus Christo?! How big do you want your cupcakes?! You should just by two if you want an assload of dessert, but I think for most people, one cupcake should suffice.
I do have one gripe which is the ratio of frosting to cake on which is about 2:1. I know most people are all about the frosting, but I am more into the cake. Just a matter of personal taste. Please give this place a try.

This place is new so I was a little bit skeptical about going there. I mean, can you really make a living selling cupcakes? Once I went in though, I didn't want to come out. The cupcakes are almost muffins consistency but taste as sweet as cupcakes! I'm not a big fan of frosting, but this stuff was amazing. They have over 160 flavors like key lime, purple velvet, and chocolate peanut butter-which has a peanut butter dollop in the middle of the chocolate cupcake. They are going to give the fro yo place next door a run for it! I can't wait to go back.

We took our little ones for a family outing to Starz last weekend. All 4 of us picked different cupcakes and all were yummy except for the gluten free M & M variety (although it's great this option is available). The place is adorable, the owner was lovely and sweet, and I got my pastry/chocolate fix for the day. The only not so good thing was the tables and chairs are not kid friendly - an accident waiting to happen. We will be back!

Starz Cupcakes are seriously delicious! Since they have so many varieties of cupcakes, we try a new one each time we go. So far, my faves are the Triton's Daughter, the Cookies and Cream , and the hazelnut one (not sure what it's called). My fiance, who is a self-proclaimed non-dessert eater even loves these treats!
I also love supporting a local, family business... especially one that donates its leftovers instead of throwing them out.
Side note, our dog loves the cupcake for dogs... and so do we

I went in with my two kids today to try out this cute new cupcake shop and what a treat it was! We went in to get a cupcake for each of us and left with those plus some for dessert tonight. I will have to lock up the remaining cupcakes so I don't eat them all. The only other place I have been to a cupcake shop is at Downtown Disney and Starz blows them out of the water! Can't wait to try more of their yummy treats.

OMG I went into this cute little shop thinking ok all this hype I am hearing is probably the same thing I heard about sprinkles! Which when I went there with my husband we were anything but impressed but I figure I'd try a cupcake shop one more time and I am soooo glad I did, words can't discribe how amazing these were!!!! I had the snicker one and a tritons something and I couldn't believe what I had just eaten it was amazing!!! And love the fact that it's a mother daughter team! I went in around 7:30 and I think it was the daughter that helped me and she couldn't have been sweeter!!! I didn't get a chance to meet the mom but I have no doubt I will cause I'll be back! I loved being able to read all about the family on the walls! It's great to go into a place and feel the history without people making all about them, great way they have it laid out! Just have to say it's amazing and the people and the taste is amazing which you never find these days!!!! So ;) they are in town it's a must go to spot.

i just created a yelp account so i could write a review for Starz Cupcakes. my boyfriend dragged me into Outdoor World today and as we walked across the parking lot i spotted this new cupcake bakery... it was all over from there.
the woman who owns the place (i think her name is Lisa) is absolutely adorable. she was so excited to help my boyfriend and i pick out our cupcake flavors. my boyfriend picked the classic yellow cake with chocolate frosting because it is a recipe that has apparently been in the family since the 1800s (check out and read about all the portraits on the walls). i spotted an empty row behind a sign that read "chocolate peanut butter " and was about to settle for the standard chocolate cupcake, when lisa suggested the chocoate peanut butter which was coming fresh out of the oven. she read my mind. she even asked for my hand once the cupcakes were ready so she could place it in my palm. "see, it's still warm on the bottom," she said. amazing. i wanted to invite this lady over for my birthday and pay her to make me birthday cupcakes. the cupcakes at are the Starz most insane desert i have ever tasted. the creamy peanut butter center made my life. i wonder if they sell them by the dozen? something tells me i've just developed a serious addiction. go in and see for yourself. these cupcakes are life changing.

OMG - these cupcakes are amazing. This place just seemed to pop up overnight. While they are just getting up and running, what is amazing about this place is the variety of wonderful flavors! Their Orange Palermo (moist orange cake with actual mandarin oranges baked inside) is to die for! I'm going back to try one of the many different chocolate flavors next.
